Maybe You Shall Pass

One of the many reasons that I love living in Riga, Latvia is the plethora of gorgeous art nouveau, art deco and new romantic architecture, particularly the striking bas-relief sculptural details. I have a folder filled with hundreds of photos just waiting to be drawn. This week’s image was a face centered above a driveway arch. Look at that bored expression on his face and his two mischievous wingmen. Maybe you shall pass.

I focused only on the face for this drawing, but also love the birds in the art nouveau forest above him. That will be the subject for another drawing sometime soon. This building has been renovated and the company did a great job preserving the delicate sculptures, which sadly isn’t always the case.

Here’s my pen and ink rendition, which reminds me of the John Boorman film “ZARDOZ” for some reason. Maybe it’s the eyes? I elongated the face and tossed in a little H.R. Giger feeling there. What do you think he’s saying? Maybe, “No Kings! Not now, not ever!”, or maybe, “Won’t bow, don’t know how.” Must be something in the air…

Until next week, be kind to yourself and to as many other people as you can and we will win.
