SURPRISE MoFo! – RS#9 Update.

It’s always a bit scary to throw your thing out into the world. Probably the worst reaction would be the sound of crickets, unless they were your intended audience. Any reaction, even a less than favorable one, is better than nothing, so I have been pleasantly surprised by the immediate and positive response that RELUCTANT SADIST #9 has received so far.

I officially launched RS#9 at the SāBRS Small Press and Zine Festival here in Riga, Latvia in early July. This was the second year that I have tabled at this festival and it was a blast to meet old friends and make new ones. The immediate reaction was good! I sold copies of RS #4, #8 and #9 and some mugs, t-shirts, post cards and rubber stamps too!

Next I was interviewed on the AWESOME COMICS PODCAST, episode 526, by my pals Tony, Dan and Vince. My first time being interviewed on a podcast about my comix life! It is always a lively discussion on all things comics, small, large or in-between, so open your ears and dive in!

Next up are a couple of reviews. The first was on the always thought-provoking “Ryan C’s Four Color Apocalypse” from August 14, 2025. Here’s a taste-

The next review was on the esteemed British comics website, Broken Frontier by Gary Usher of Trigger Warnings. His reviewed is titled, “Reluctant Sadist #9 – Hal Weaver’s Old School Minicomic with a Bigfoot Theme”. Here’s a taste-

At the end of August I traveled to London to catch part of FRIGHTFEST, a UK horror film festival and see the European premiere of “Mother of Flies” by the relentlessly creative Adams Family whose movies and music (check out their band H6LLB6ND6R) I have admired for a while. They are on the shortlist of director’s I would like to work with. I had the good fortune to meet the whole family of Toby, John, Zelda and Lulu at the festival and we talked about acting, filmmaking and horror movies. I was honored to gifted them a copy of RS#9.

Whenever I am in London, of course I had to stop at GOSH! Comics in SoHo to peruse the extensive small press offerings and also deliver copies of RS #8 and #9. Greg and the amazing GOSH! team do an incredible job supporting small press comix and have the stock displayed in the front of the store. It seems every time I visit they have added more shelf space for the scene.

The final bit of news comes from the USA and Thomas Campbell of The Comics Blogger who is my biggest stateside distributor and will be tabling at SMALL PRESS EXPO (SPX) this year and will stock copies of RS#9! That is the first time, that I know of that RELUCTANT SADIST will be available at SPX. So if you are attending, pop by and say hello to Thomas (Table H4B) as he’ll have a table full of super cool comix from all over the world.

Whew! Yeah, it has been a busy summer and that’s just my comix life!
So, if you have a creative project, comix, writing, art, music, film; whatever, that has been on your mind or is half finished, then get it done and share it with the world. You might just be surprised where it will take you…

Remember, if you have extra time, energy, food, money, good humor; then share it!
Abundance must flow!
Until the next time, take care of yourself.
OK HW

Brilliant stuff as always brother. Keep shaking the earth with your boots and your brain. Here to enjoy all of the goodness that you squeeze out of the damp bar rags and merry-go-round organs from every corner of this wobbly planet. Zahdah!
