A Close Encounter

I love sci-fi movies, particularly old cheesy ones from the 1950s. There is an innocence and sweetness to them that is comfortable as an old pair of slippers for me. One of my favorites is “Invasion of the Saucermen” from 1957 because it really delivers on the classic saucermen action, unlike many movies of that era where you might get a quick glimpse of the creature once or twice at the end, or they overexpose the badly designed and created aliens too much. This movie has superbly designed aliens that went on to influence the 1962 Topp’s collector card series “Mars Attacks”, which was the basis for Tim Burton’s 1996 movie of the same name. So, let’s get to this week’s drawing, of one of the saucermen…

Up close and personal! I found a great series of photos from the movie on the awesome IG feed of monsterfanclub333. I had never seen this photo, an EXCU (Extreme Close-Up) of one of the aliens and had to draw it! Love all the exposed veins and big eyes.

If you want to see the movie, there’s a so-so copy of it on archive.org and I’m sure you could probably find a better version elsewhere. This movie came out in the height of the “flying saucer” mania in the 1950s. Considering there’s plenty of talk these days of the US Government releasing more “classified materials” soon on possible alien contact and sightings, doesn’t seem like much has changed, well, maybe the A.I. generated hoax photos and video. People want to believe!

Until next week, let’s hope the WWIII vibes chill and things settle down.

Don’t let the screwheads steal your smile!

OK HW

That’s great!
I love Invasion of the Saucermen too and for the same reasons.
Your drawing makes me feel like I’m looking through a telescope for the saucers, pan over and there’s the alien right there in front of me!!!!
